Getting Your Yellow Slip in Cyprus: EU Citizen Registration Explained

The Yellow Slip (officially the MEU1 registration certificate) is the most important document for any EU citizen moving to Cyprus. Without it, you can't open a bank account, sign a rental contract, or register for taxes. Here's how to get it.

What Is the Yellow Slip?

It's your proof of legal residence as an EU citizen in Cyprus. The name comes from the yellow paper it's printed on. It contains your name, passport number, address, and an Alien Registration Number (ARC).

Where to Apply

Civil Registry and Migration Department offices. The main ones are in Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, and Paphos. You need an appointment — book online or by phone.

Documents You Need

  • Valid passport or national ID
  • Rental contract or property deed
  • Proof of income or employment (contract, bank statements, or proof of sufficient resources)
  • Health insurance (private or GHS registration)
  • Passport-size photos

Timeline

If your documents are complete, you can get it the same day or within a few days. In practice, expect 1-2 weeks during busy periods. The fee is minimal (under €20).

Pro Tips

Bring originals AND copies of everything. Go early — offices get crowded after 10am. And have your rental contract ready before your appointment — landlords sometimes take a few days to prepare it.
