Moving to Cyprus: The Practical Checklist Nobody Tells You About
You've decided to move to Cyprus. Congratulations! But between the excitement and the Google searches, there's a lot of practical stuff that doesn't make it into the glossy "move abroad" articles. Here's what you actually need to handle.
Before You Arrive
Get your paperwork sorted early. You'll need:
- Passport/ID — EU citizens can enter freely; non-EU citizens may need a visa
- Proof of address — Start looking for housing before you arrive. Rental contracts in English are standard
- Health insurance — Required for visa applications and useful until your GHS coverage kicks in
- Apostilled documents — Marriage certificates, birth certificates, university degrees. Get apostilles in your home country before leaving
First Week in Cyprus
Your priority list:
- Yellow Slip — Your registration certificate as an EU citizen. You need this for almost everything else
- Bank account — Bring proof of address and employment/income. Bank of Cyprus and Hellenic Bank are the main options
- Phone number — Cyta, Epic, or PrimeTel. Prepaid SIMs are easy; postpaid needs your Yellow Slip
- Tax registration — Get your TIN from the Tax Department
The Things That Catch People Off Guard
Driving is on the left (British system). Summers are genuinely hot — 40°C+ in July/August. Sunday shopping is limited. And bureaucracy moves at a Mediterranean pace — bring patience and all your documents.
